What Is The Value Of Time? How Do You Make The Most Of Yours In The New Year?

Time is the most valuable asset we have, but it is what we take the most for granted. How many times have you said, “Oh, I’ll just do that tomorrow!”

One of the times I realize that I waste time is when I have an unexpected deadline. Recently, someone called and said they were stopping by for a short visit. I asked what time they would arrive and realized I had a window of 20 to 30 minutes.

I went into hyper-drive and did so much within that time period. My husband said he was impressed; he said look at what you accomplished in that little bit of time. All the while I am thinking to myself that I should approach everyday with that attitude. Maybe not quite so hyper but I know that everyday I misuse time.

Most people are creatures of habit and we tend to fall into a routine that we are comfortable with doing. We do not think of changing and may even shy away from any idea of change. That is so easy to do.

It is December and right now some of us may be thinking about 2019 and what we did with all of our time. In just a few weeks we start a new year. Do we want to make any changes?

I know I do have changes I want to make. I have a few activities I have been procrastinating about for a long time. They are first on my list to do in 2020.

My approach this year will be different.

Instead of simply making a list, I am going to actually make a schedule and I am going to take it one step further by breaking them into time segments. I do not know how long each will take me so I will schedule in 30 minutes a day and at a specific time.

What I am hoping will happen is once I start the task and the 30 minutes is up I will just keep going. If I do an hour each time the task will quickly get done. When one is done I will schedule another in that time slot

The big goal for me will be to create a new habit. There will always be another project or activity that I can allocate to the specific time slot.

If I allocate 30 minutes to multiple tasks throughout the week and consistently do them, my hope is to create multiple habits.

I want to create good beneficial habits that I will continue to do. I did some research and found a study that concluded it takes 66 days to form a habit that will become habitual. It states, ” On average a plateau in automaticity was reached after 66 days. In other words it had become as much of a habit as it was ever going to become.” https://www.spring.org.uk/2009/09/how-long-to-form-a-habit.php

Most other information I read stated that habits can be formed in 21 days. That might be true for some activities and for some people or personalities. Speaking from experience 21 days would not work well for me.

So what do you want to accomplish in 2020? What is important to you and why? The reason why it is important to you will help determine the outcome. The level of importance to you really is the determining factor on whether you will successfully create a new habit.

This is my plan for accomplishing my goals in the coming year. It is simple and realistic for me.

There are many other things that can be done for making the New Year more organized and for you to be successful.
