Goals, goals, goals! People think and talk about goals all the time, or at least that is what it seems like. There have been enough articles written about goals and their importance.
It is almost 2020, and it is time to think about 2019, and what you accomplished, and to look forward to what you want to have happen in 2020. Were you able to achieve what you hoped for in 2019? Don’t let it stress you out if you did not finish what you started.
In planning for success in 2020, set some goals
Why? Because goals are important. Even if you feel goals are not important, or you think you have never set any goals; you have. You may not have written them down, but I am pretty certain you have them rambling around in your head
We all have things that are important to us and we would like to make them happen. So, yes, we do spend time thinking about them. Unfortunately, we may not go through the process of setting goals.
That is the problem, and that is why so many articles have been written about why you should set goals. If you do not go through the process of forming and writing down what you want to accomplish, I can almost guarantee that you will never be successful.
You need to set formal goals. It is a process and it is important.
If you continue to let your thoughts ramble around in your head with no structure or direction, that is where they will stay.
You need to decide what you want to accomplish? The process of taking the time to contemplate what it is we want to happen in our life can be cathartic. How often do we open up to our true feelings and emotions? How often do we acknowledge what we really want?
Spend some time. Most of the time we don’t acknowledge what we truly want. We are too busy, we do not have the confidence, and it is easy to just drift through our life and do what is most comfortable.
By setting goals we are deciding how we want to live our life. We are making a conscience choice instead of leaving our life to chance.
Setting a goal requires us to be specific. For example, you want to save money. What is the total amount? Do want to save that amount in twelve months, or do you want to save it in six months? Divide the amount by the number of months and set a goal of saving that amount each month. How much will you have to put away each week?
When you have a specific goal and you understand what is required to make it happen you are more likely to succeed.
Goals benefit us in many ways.
When you set a goal and see it written down and planned out, it makes everything clear. We have gained confidence and can plan each day simply by looking at our goal.
Before we took the time to write down our goals and they were tid-bits of thoughts slooshing around in our mind there was no accountability. There were days when you might not have thought about doing any work to achieve those vague wants and needs.
When you set a goal, you make yourself accountable. You know your goals and you have a plan. You know what you have to do.
When you have goals and have written down a plan it is like having a GPS system that tells you what turn to make and when to make it.
Everything is clear and concise and you don’t have to spend time every day deciding what to do and how to do it.
Look at your goals. It is all mapped out for you.
Each time you set a goal it is making a commitment. It is like writing down an affirmation of how you want to live your life. You, and only you, are responsible for achieving your goals and it motivates you to look at your plan every day.
You are motivated to do well. As you complete portions of your goals and see progress you will gain confidence and find yourself celebrating those small steps completed along the way. It motivates you to keep on track.
Learn Better Skills
By setting goals and making a plan to complete them you may learn new skills or improve the ones you have.
Before you set your goals, and you were randomly thinking about what you would like to do in the future, there was no structure.
When you set goals it is necessary to prioritize what is important. What is my goal? What to I have to do first? Is this really necessary, or can I eliminate it? How long will it take?
You become better at organizing by breaking your goals into steps. Decide what needs to be done first, then second and third.
To summarize setting goals is an effective way to organize your life and be more effective.
You should set both short term and long term goals and keep your goals manageable. Attaining manageable goals leads to setting larger goals for the future.
Your goals are a tangible, written reminder of your priorities. When you make goals a part of your everyday life, they can become automatic guide, similiar to having an internal GPS system. Goals keep us on a straight projectory to a better, happier, more relaxed, confident life.
Remember goals can be about any part of our life. We set them for work, but they can be for so much more. Life goes by fast and we tend to focus on how we make our living and how we support ourselves. We forget to focus on what makes us better and what makes us happy. Set some goals for all of those things too.
Maybe if we set our goals for being better physically, mentally and emotionally, the goals on work and money will fall into place. We are all better when we take care of ourselves first.
