A new day beckons…full of opportunity. Each day we awaken as a new person changed in some way by the experiences of yesterday. The brief encounter, a comment heard or shared. a book we read, the evening news, a touch, a special word or a word spoken in anger; all of these things change us.
We may not realize, or acknowledge the change, but it does happen everyday. Humans are not static, and even if we spend a day with not contact from another person, there are many stimuli that will affect us.
A walk outside, a flower, an unexpected noise, the laughter of a child, or a voice heard on the breeze, can all impact us. I took a walk outside recently which changed me forever. You can read about it here:
Not all events will have that impact, thank goodness. There will be many insignificant moments that we may not pay attention to, but our brain will react. Our heart, and sometimes our soul, will notice and we will be changed in some small way.
We are a accumulation of all our experiences.
Some of our experiences will be gut-wrenching, most will be mundane. Others will be mildly surprising. Some will fill our heart and others will empty it.
The most important aspect of our lives is our reaction. How do we react? Our reactions define us and determine what kind of a person we are.
The best part of each day, and each experience, is deciding how we react. We get to choose. No one else; the choice is ours and ours alone. We are in charge.
So how do you decide? What is important to you? What do you want to be remembered for?
I believe that each of us is a chameleon of sorts. We can easily change ourselves to fit in, please someone, or to succeed in a profession. I know I have changed in each personal relationship I have had to fit the need, and personality, of the other person involved.
We each grow with the influence of our parents and our basic personality is shaped as a child. I do believe we are born with a specific disposition and then we grow from there. We add layers to who we are each and every day. Some of the layers stick and some dry up and fall away.
We are never the same. We are always in flux.
So what happened in your life today and how did you react? What choices did you make? What effect do you think your choices will have on you? How will they affect your relationships?
Choose wisely because each and every choice will shape who you are when you wake up tomorrow as a new person shaped by the choices you made today.
Life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make makes you.John C. Maxwell
